Introduction

This policy explains what information Hadith Searcher processes, why we use it, and the choices available to you.

Open source

Hadith Searcher is an open-source application. You can review its source code and contribute on GitHub.

Search requests

To retrieve search results and related content, the app sends your search text, excluded words, selected search options, and requested content identifiers to the search API. This is necessary to provide those features and happens independently of whether usage analytics or crash reporting is enabled.

Usage analytics

Depending on your build, usage analytics is enabled automatically or is optional and requires your consent. Google Play builds enable it automatically without an in-app opt-out. F-Droid and GitHub builds ask for your consent and let you change your choice in Settings. In versions 3.0.3 and later, both options are preselected on first launch. Uncheck either option to decline before pressing Continue. Neither service sends telemetry before Continue. Saved choices remain unchanged on updates.

We use PostHog to understand how people use Hadith Searcher and improve its features. When analytics is enabled, the app sends information including:

We do not attach your name or email address to analytics events or create PostHog person profiles. However, events can be linked through generated identifiers, and search text may contain information you enter. This data is not necessarily fully anonymous.

Session recording is disabled. The app also disables PostHog's IP-based location enrichment. PostHog still receives the network connections used to deliver events, which expose your IP address.

Crash reports and performance

Depending on your build, crash reporting and performance monitoring are enabled automatically or are optional and require your consent. Google Play builds enable them automatically without an in-app opt-out. F-Droid and GitHub builds ask for your consent separately from analytics and let you change your choice in Settings. The same onboarding choices apply here: uncheck diagnostics before Continue to keep it disabled. You can also disable it later in Settings.

We use Sentry to identify crashes, errors, and performance problems. When diagnostics is enabled, reports may include error types, stack traces, app version, device and operating system information, and the operation that failed. We also collect a sample of performance measurements for API and database operations.

The app is configured to remove user identity fields, request details, error messages, and breadcrumbs from error reports before sending them. Screenshots and session recordings are disabled. Sentry receives the network connections used to deliver reports, which expose your IP address.

Information stored on your device

The app stores favourites, settings, and consent preferences on your device. Analytics and diagnostic tools may also store identifiers and queued reports locally. Although favourites are stored locally, adding or removing a favourite sends an event containing the hadith identifier when analytics is enabled.

How we use information

We use this information to provide search results and related content, understand feature usage, diagnose failures, and improve the app's reliability and performance. We may also process information where necessary to meet legal obligations or address security issues.

Information sharing

When enabled, analytics and diagnostics send individual events and reports to PostHog and Sentry, respectively, rather than only aggregated statistics. We do not sell, trade, or rent your information for marketing purposes. We may disclose information where required by law.

Data retention and deletion

We retain information for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, subject to the retention settings of the services we use and any applicable legal requirements.

Where your build allows you to disable analytics or diagnostics, doing so stops future collection by that service. It does not automatically delete information already received.

You can contact us to request access to or deletion of information associated with your use of the app. Because telemetry uses generated identifiers rather than your name or email address, we may need additional information to locate the relevant records.

Security

We limit the information included in telemetry reports as described above. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the app or our data practices change. We will publish the revised policy on this page and update the date above.
